Working in a provisational comedy in Chicago after graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan university, Twitter's C.E.O. Dick Costolo used to serve as the C.O.O. till 2012, joined the theatre during his sophomore year at the university.
In 2004, Costolo, along with Eric Lunt, Steve Olechowski, and Matt Shobe,
founded the web feed management
provider FeedBurner. After Google bought FeedBurner in 2007, Dick
Costolo became an employee of the search google. In July 2009, he
left Google, and in September 2009, it was announced that he was joining Twitter
as its COO. Although his 2010
takeover as CEO was supposed to be temporary, while CEO Evan Williams was on paternity
leave, it eventually became a permanent position.
In May 2011, it was announced that President Obama had appointed Dick Costolo
to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee, along with the
Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group, Scott
Charney, and McAfee President of Security David DeWalt.
In January 2012, he was embroiled in the SOPA controversy after commenting on Wikipedia's planned blackout
on January 18, 2012 after stating, "That's just silly. Closing a global business
in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish."
When asked if Twitter is the single tool that has had the largest
impact on journalism and how it feels to be in control of the free press?
Dick answered: "I Don’t see Twitter like that. We are a tech company. Media companies,
are creating and curating content, we are not that."
He has promised all users of the social media (Twitter), that before the end of 2012, users will be able to download all of their tweets!
