A joint operation by the Nigeria army, airforce and other military agencies has yielded the rescue of 178 people includin 101 children and 67 women in Aulari, 70 km South of Borno state capital Maiduguri - North east Nigeria. According to a Sunday statement, Nigeria claimed to have freed nearly 180 hostages -- including
more than 100 children -- held by Boko Haram jihadists in a dramatic
weekend rescue.
A top Boko Haram commander was captured in the operation as scores of Boko Haram insurgents were killed. In the words of Military spokesperson, Colonel Tukur Gusau,
"During the offensive operations, 178 people held
captive by the terrorists were rescued...
They include 101 children, 67 women and 10 men."
