PRESIDENT OBAMA DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN NEWYORK...AS HURRICANE SANDY ADVANCE

Map of the Evacuation zone

As the deadline for subways, LIRR, Metro-North train service and "Zone A" evacuations has come and gone and the city continues to prepare for "Frankenstorm." President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency for New York. This opens the door for assistance from FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to assist local government agencies during and after the storm.
Bus service is set to be suspended at 9 p.m. and and public schools in the city will be closed tomorrow in advance of Hurricane Sandy’s violent arrival, authorities said.
The high-risk areas in "Zone A" include the Rockaways, City Island and parts of Staten Island, the South Bronx, Battery Park City and the Lower East Side.

PATH is set to shut down train service at 12:01 a.m. Monday. The final Staten Island Ferry today will run at 8 p.m. from St. George Terminal, and 8:30 p.m. from Whitehall Terminal, officials said. The service will then be suspended until further notice.
“I cannot stress enough this is for your protection,” Bloomberg said of the evacuation order.
The mayor said he doesn’t want to put first responders in harm’s way because New Yorkers didn’t heed evacuation orders.
“The biggest fear is that people don’t leave and in retrospect they should have [then they call] an emergency and some of emergency workers lose their lives trying to save others needlessly,” Bloomberg said.
“There will always be emergencies but there’s no reason to create conditions for emergencies.”
