Meet the molecular structure of Metformin
the diabetes drug that may soon cure cancer

Metformin is a workhorse drug for people with diabetes. It helps patients control their blood sugar and makes them more sensitive to insulin. But soon, metformin may take on a new role fighting cancer.

Results of a preliminary study presented Saturday at the American Assn. for Cancer Research’s annual meeting in Chicago suggest metformin slowed the growth of prostate cancer tumors. The study involved 22 men with prostate cancer. All of them were scheduled to have their prostates removed, and some of them took metformin for about seven weeks beforehand. After the prostates were excised, researchers from Toronto compared them and found that tumors grew more slowly in men who took the diabetes drug than in men who didn’t.

Those findings were augmented by a flurry of studies published Saturday in various AACR journals. Taken together, they offer hopeful signs that the diabetes drug may help prevent or treat an array of cancers.

Among them:

* In a study that examined 302 patients with pancreatic cancer, 117 were taking metformin. Researchers from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center found that the one-year survival rate for patients on metformin was 64%, compared with only 46% for patients who weren’t on the drug. After two years, the survival rate was 30% for those taking metformin and 15% for those who weren’t. The findings were published in Clinical Cancer Research.

* Liver cancer tumors grew less in mice that were given metformin than in mice that didn’t get the drug. University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers found that metformin’s ability to prevent the formation of fat in the liver helped keep the cancer at bay. The study was published in Cancer Prevention Research.

* In another mouse study, researchers from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research induced the animals to grow pre-cancerous lesions in their mouths. Mice who took metformin wound up with fewer oral cancers, and the tumors that did grow were smaller. These results also appear in Cancer Prevention Research.

Metformin is derived from the French lilac plant, Galega officinalis. According to this report in the journal Practical Diabetes, it is “reputed to be the most widely prescribed agent in the treatment of diabetes.”

Researchers have been on to metformin’s potential as a cancer treatment since at least 2010, according to this Los Angeles Times story.

MASTERCARD AND VISA WARN OF MASSIVE DATA BREACH!

Krebs on Security is reporting that MasterCard and Visa are alerting member banks of a “massive” security breach at a credit card processor.

Brian Krebs, who runs the site, reported that his sources in the financial sector said the breach might involve more than 10 million compromised card numbers.
MasterCard and Visa sent alerts to banks, Krebs reported, saying the card processor was compromised between Jan. 21-Feb. 15. Banks are reviewing transaction data to try to determine a common point of purchase, he said.

“Sources at two different major financial institutions said the transactions that most of the cards they analyzed seem to have in common are that they were used in parking garages in and around the New York City area,” Krebs said.

The private alerts also said that full Track 1 and Track 2 data was taken – meaning that the information could be used to counterfeit new cards, Krebs said.
In an interview, Krebs said he had been “sitting on the story for a week,” to obtain more information. So far, he has not been able to identify the card processor. He did not hear back from MasterCard or Visa, and said, “I don’t anticipate hearing from them.”

It is not clear how many cards were breached, Krebs said, but on Wednesday, PSCU — a provider of online financial services to credit unions — “said it alerted 482 credit unions that appear to have had cards impacted by the breach, and that a total of 56,455 member VISA and MasterCard accounts were compromised.”

PSCU said fraudulent activity had been detected on a relatively small number of those cards — 876 accounts — and that the activity was geographically dispersed, Krebs said.
Cardholders, he pointed out in the interview, are not on the hook for fraudulent purchases. Still, he added, “people should always keep an eye on their statements,” and report suspicious transactions immediately.

SADE ADU TO RELEASE "BRING ME HOME" DVD!

Nigerian born british grammy award winning soul singer Sade Adu is set to release her "Bring Me Home - 2011 album DVD"

The DVD will be released on May 22, 2012.

The DVD, which was shot in various cities during the tour's 54-date U.S. run, also features a behind-the-scenes film shot by Muller, a technical documentary and outtakes from the crew.

Sade’s tour was in support of 2010's platinum-selling “Soldier of Love.” The trek was one of last year's top 10 grossing tours.

BLAME RAY J FOR THE COCAINE THAT KILLED WHITNEY HOUSTON - BOBBY'S SISTER

Leolah Brown, Bobby Brown( ex whitney Houston's husband)'s sister appeared on Dr Drew after the Coroner announced that Whitney Houston died from intake of cacaine and a faulty heart, that she saw RayJ leave Whitney's hotel in a hurry while hiding his head, being pushed into a car...she said:

Why? I loooked and I said, "why is he hiding his face?" He's always trying to show his face when he's around Whitney. Why now? Why are you trying to hide now Ray J?

BOBBY BROWN ARRESTED AT 12:30PM TODAY!

Bobby Brown was arrested today(monday 26th march, 2012) in the afternoon on a suspicion of DIU in california.

The arrest was for making a call while driving, but the arresting officer Harry conducted a sobrierity test on him, which he failed!

But Bobby's manager has now confirmed he's now home.
