SENATOR KILLED AS GUNMEN ATTACK SCENE OF MASS BURIAL IN JOS - NIGERIA

PDP senator representing Jos North of Plateau state Datong have been shot dead with several others while attending a MASS burial of indegenes of Jos killed by Fulani herdsmen.

Senator Datong won his first election into the Senate in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011. He was previously a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom federal constituency.

Also killed is Hon. Gyang James Fulani, the Chief Whip of the Plateau state House of Assembly. Hon. Fulani was representing Barkin Ladi constituency. Barkin Ladi is about 25 kilometres from the state’s capital, Jos. 

But another lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Simon Mwatdkon was lucky as he is currently hospitalised after recovering from coma.

The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus stepped foot on Centre Court to win their fifth Wimbledon doubles crown,this win marks their fifth Wimbledon doubles title. The sisters defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka, 7-5, 6-4 in an indoor match that ended just before Centre Court’s 11 p.m. curfew.

Serena and her sister Venus have combined to win 10 of the past 13 Wimbledons so far...the only sisters to have done so ever.

37 KILLED IN SATURDAY'S RELIGIOUS VIOLENCE IN JOS - NIGERIA

A Jos resident at the grave of a loved one lost to religious violence in Plateau

Military spokesman Mustapha Salisu said Sunday that: 

"Assailants launched "sophisticated attacks" on villages near Jos early Saturday. Salisu said police and the army fought back for hours. He said two policemen, 14 civilians and 21 assailants were killed..." 37 people so far have been killed in the Christian villages near Jos city that has seen religious violence in the past.

The Nigerian Red Cross said over 100 people have been displaced so far.

A Christian Advocacy Group spokesperson Mark Lipdo gave a list of 13 Christian villages attacked so far.

MAN CAUGHT PLANTING BOMB AT AN ISLAMIC SCHOOL IN JOS

An islamic School in Bukuru, Jos South L.G.A of plateau state Nigeria, became a target for terror act as a 35 year old man was caught while trying to plant a bomb at the Islamic school...The Police's anti-bomb squad was called in and the team detonated the bomb while taking the bomber into custody...though, Members of the community who got hold of the suspect in Bukuru alleged that there were five of them that went to the scene to plant the bomb but were able to grab one of them, while the other four escaped.

A community member said, “We were vigilant because we heard rumour of that attacks were been plotted against this community, so at about 10pm Friday night, we saw people strange to us and we monitored their activities. We later discovered they were about planting an object, so we went after them and we were able to grab one which we handed over to security agencies”

Also at Congo Russia area of Jos North local government another explosion was averted following the discovery of an improvised explosive devise (IEDS) planted in the neighbourhood by suspected terrorist gang.

Nigeria Police Plateau state Command  offered a statement about the acts through the force's Public Relations Officer, DSP Abu Emmanuel, said:

"At about 11pm on Thursday, there was a distress call from the Divisional Police Officer of Nassarawa Gwom about a strange container suspected to be a bomb planted in the area...We moved swiftly to the scene to discover it was a bomb and we immediately defused it."

And concerning the arrested suspect the police said, 

“Yes we are in custody of the suspect who was found allegedly planting bomb in Bukuru, we cannot disclose his name now, we are investigating the matter to know his level of involvement in the crime, so we assumed he is innocent for now."

The Commissioner of police in the state Dipo Ayeni through the State's Police public Relations Officer said:

"The Commissioner appreciates and is highly delighted with the manner members of the public reacted to the incident and for notifying the police and called on them to sustain the tempo...he advised members to report any suspicious movement of criminal elements to security agencies with a view to nip in the bud the criminal activities of terrorist gangs in the state".

MAN UNITED'S PARK JI-SUNG SET TO JOIN TAYE TAIWO AT QPR

The British media reported today Saturday, 07/07/2012 that Queens Park Rangers have agreed to sign South Korean midfielder Park Ji-sung from Manchester United.

QPR's Malaysian aviation enterpreneur owner Tony Fernandes says:

"Lots is happening in the club. We've signed five players, we've got a few more to announce."

"What (manager) Mark (Hughes) would like to do is have two people in each position," he said. "Now whether we get to that situation..."

The signing which could potentially be worth 5.0 million pounds ($7.75 million), will cost QPR an initial transfer fee of 2 million for the 31-year-old who, a year ago, signed a two-year deal to stay at United until the end of the 2012-13 season.

Park who was the first Asian to compete in a Champions League final in 2009, and won four Premier League titles at United. The former captain of his country, he made 100 appearances for South Korea between 2000 and 2011. And while at Man United Park has made over 200 appearances for United since joining from PSV Eindhoven in 2005

South Korea is also an important growth area for Fernandes' AirAsia airline.

Park would be the second United player to move to QPR this week following young defender Fabio Da Silva who has joined on a season long loan deal.

QPR are also planning a new 40-45,000 seater stadium in West London and have hired architects Populous, who designed the new London Olympic Stadium and Silverstone's Wing pit and paddock complex.

That would be more than double the capacity of QPR's current Loftus Road home. Fernandes said those plans were looking good and a preferred site had been identified in the White City area.

"We could have sold 20,000 season tickets easily and I think with the investment in the squad and some of the ambitions that we have, and the catchment area that we are in, I don't envisage that it will be difficult to fill up," QPR's owner concluded.

LIBYANS TURN OUT ENMASSE TO VOTE FOR THE 1ST TIME IN 60 YEARS!

For the 1st time in 60 years Libyans conclude voting in their first free national election...and they did it in amazing style - turn out en-mass to vote.

The election is to select a temporary assembly which will have the task of picking a cabinet and a prime minister.

Voting began late in some cities where gunmen prevented voters, and one person was killed in a shooting close to a polling station in Ajdabiya.

Nevertheless, overall turnout has been described as high, with voters choosing their first government since Col Gaddafi came to power in 1969.

Few Libyans remember their last national vote in 1965, when no political parties were allowed.

Even fewer took part in their country's first parliamentary elections in February 1952, shortly after independence.

Though some have their complaints. 

Salim Ben Tahir of the National Election Commission says:

"It's important for the stability of the country."

"We can do it better in the future but the NTC and the current government are losing legitimacy. People aren't respecting them any more and things are getting out of hand."

SERENA WILLIAMS MAKES IT 5 WIMBLEDON TITLES IN GRAND STYLE!...Joins sister Venus at 5!

30-year-old Serena Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title Saturday on Center Court, beating Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to claim her 14th major championship.


In her words:


“I can’t even describe it. I almost didn’t make it,”
“A few years ago, you know, I was in the hospital, and now I’m here again. It’s so worth it, and I’m so happy.”


Radwanska would have taken over the No. 1 ranking with a win. Instead, Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka will reclaim the top spot from Maria Sharapova.


Randwanska said:

“Serena played too good today, but I’m just very happy to be here in the final,” Radwanska said. “It was not my day. I’ll try just next year. We’ll see.”


After hitting a backhand winner on match point, she fell onto her back to the grass. She then rose with a grin as big sister Venus — another five-time Wimbledon champion — smiled and applauded, along with the rest of the crowd. After shaking hands with Radwanska, Williams climbed into the box where her family was seated. She hugged her father, Venus, their mother and others.


Out on court, Williams had little trouble at the start, using her hard serve and powerful groundstrokes to win the first five games and run Radwanska all over the grass.


Radwanska broke Williams in the next game to even the score at 4-4, and then broke again to win the second set. Williams responded in the third set, taking the last five games of the match. She finished with 58 winners to 13 for Radwanska, including an edge of 20-3 in the final set. Williams lost only eight points on her first serve.
“Aggie played so well. That’s why she has had such a great career, and so young,” Williams told the crowd. “You guys should give her another round of applause because she’s amazing and she did an amazing job today.”
The match was played with the Center Court roof open, and it was delayed by rain for a short time after the first set.


Later Saturday, Serena and Venus Williams will play in the doubles final.
A little more than a month ago, many started writing Williams off for good. She lost in the first round of this year’s French Open, the first time she had ever exited a Grand Slam tournament that early.
But at Wimbledon, she looked every bit a champion again.
She broke her own tournament record for aces in a match with 23 against Zheng Jie in the third round. Less than a week later, she eclipsed that mark with 24 against Azarenka in the semifinals.
On Saturday, she finished with 17 aces — including four in one game — and a record 102 for the tournament.
It was Williams’ first Grand Slam title since she won at the All England Club two years ago. Shortly after winning that title, Williams cut her feet on glass at a restaurant, leading to a series of health problems, including being hospitalized for clots in her lungs.


In the men’s final on Sunday, six-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer will face British hope Andy Murray. The fourth-seeded Murray is trying to become the first British man to win the title at the All England Club since Fred Perry in 1936.


“I never dreamt of being here again, being so down,” Williams said. “Never give up. You can continue.”Williams is the first woman in her 30s to win a Wimbledon title since Martina Navratilova, who won at the All England Club in 1990 when she was 33.

NO CASUALTY AS POLICE DEFUSE BOMB THAT COULD HAVE WRECKED MASSIVE HAVOC IN JOS

An IED tagged 'mega bomb' has been defused in Jos.

Emmanuel Abuh, Plateau State police spokesman, said:

“The police anti-bomb squad successfully recovered, disarmed, defused and evacuated the improvised explosive device or bomb planted by terrorists,” 

In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, Deputy Superintendent Abuh Emmanuel, said the command 

“wishes to intimate members of the public on the incident that occurred in Jos North Local Government area yesterday (Thursday), July 5, 2012 at about 2350hours when suspected terrorists planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at Congo Russia

He said the bomb was discovered late Thursday in an area of the city called Congo Russia after most residents had gone to bed.

“However, there was a distress call from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Nasarawa Gwong Division, Chief Superintendent John Edeh which prompted the Police Anti-Bomb Squad led by Assistant Superintendent Abel Mbibi to respond and moved swiftly to the scene of the incident.”

The statement added: “The Police Anti-Bomb Squad successfully recovered, disarmed, defused and evacuated the Improvised Explosive Devices otherwise called Bombs planted by the terrorists. There was no casualty or damage to property. No arrest has been made in connection with the incident yet, but police have intensified efforts to track down the hoodlums.”

The statement conveyed the appreciation of the Commissioner of the Plateau State Command, Mr. Emmanuel Diipo Ayeni, to the people of Congo Russia who was said to be highly delighted with the manner members of the public reacted to the incident, admonishing them to keep the tempo. It was reported that members of the public remained calm and refused to be provoked by the incident.

The statement once again enjoined members of the public to report to the police and other security agencies any suspicious movement of criminal elements as that is used by the security agencies to nip in the bud the criminal activities of terrorists in the state.

It adds that “apart from that, we want to assure members of the public that the State Police Command in tandem with other security agencies are capable of providing adequate and comprehensive security on the Plateau. Therefore, you should go about your lawful duties without any form of intimidation.”
