WHAT PROFESSOR WOLE SOYINKA SAID ABOUT PRESIDENT JONATHAN'S RENAMING OF UNILAG MOSHOOD ABIOLA UNIVERSITY, LAGOS.
Professor Wole Soyinka, M.K.O. Abiola's children and ProDemocracy activists |
“This is one gift horse which, contrary to traditional saying, must be inspected thoroughly in the mouth.
Primary from all of us must be a plea to the MKO Abiola family not to misconstrue the protests against the naming of the University of Lagos after their heroic patriarch. Issues must be separated and understood in their appropriate contexts. The family will acknowledge that, among the loudest opposing voices to Jonathan’s gift horse, are those who have clamoured tirelessly that MKO Abiola, the Nigerian nation’s president-elect, be honoured nationally, and in a befitting manner.
Next is my confession to considerable shock that President Goodluck Jonathan did not even think it fit to consult or inform the administrators of the university, including Council and Senate, of his intention to re-name their university for any reason, however laudable. This arbitrariness, this act of disrespect, was a barely tolerated aberration of military governance. It is totally deplorable in what is supposed to be a civilian order.
After that comes the bad-mouthing of MKO Abiola and the Nigerian electorate by President Jonathan who referred to MKO as the “presumed winner” of a historic election. While applauding the president for finally taking the bull by the horn and rendering honour unto whom honour is due, the particularities of this gesture have made it dubious, suspect, and tainted. You do not honour someone while detracting from his or her record of achievement. MKO Abiola was not a presumed winner, but the President-elect of a nation, and thus universally acknowledged.
It is sad, very sad, that after his predecessor who, for eight full years of presidency, could not even bear to utter the name of a man who made his own incumbency possible, along comes someone who takes back with the left hand what the right has offered. However, there is hope. Legalists have claimed that there is a legal flaw to the entire process. The university, solidly backed by other tertiary institutions nation-wide, should immediately proceed to the courts of law and demand a ‘stay of execution’. That should give President Jonathan time to re-consider and perhaps shift his focus to the nation’s capital for institutions begging for rituals of re-naming. After all, it is on record that the House of Assembly did once resolve that the Abuja stadium be named after the man already bestowed the unique title of “Pillar of African Sports”. He deserved that, and a lot more. What he did not deserve is to be, albeit posthumously, the centre of a fully avoidable acrimony, one that has now resulted in the shutting down one of the institutions of learning to whose cause, the cause of learning, President-elect MKO Abiola also made unparalleled private contributions.
Let me end by stressing that my position remains the same as it was when the University of Ife was re-named Obafemi Awolowo University. I deplored it at the time, deplore it till today, have never come to terms with it, and still hope that some day in the not too distant future, that crime against the culture of institutional autonomy will be rectified. Let us not compound the aberrations of the past with provocations in an era that should propel us towards a belated new Age of Enlightenment.

SNAKE KILLS PASTOR AS HE TRIES A MOSES STUNT IN CHURCH!
Pastor mark Wolford with a rattle snake when the going was good |
Just like he watched a snake kill his father years before, Pentecostal pastor Mark Wolford, 44, hosted an outdoor service at the Panther Wildlife Management Area in West Virginia Sunday, which he touted on his Facebook page prior to the event.
"I am looking for a great time this Sunday," Wolford wrote May 22, "It is going to be a homecoming like the old days. Good 'ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers."
Robin Vanover, Wolford's sister, said that 30 minutes into the outdoor service, Wolford passed around a poisonous timber rattlesnake, which eventually bit him.
"He laid it on the ground," Vanover said in the interview, "and he sat down next to the snake, and it bit him on the thigh."
Vanover said Wolford was then transported to a family member's home in Bluefield about 80 miles away to recover. But as the situation worsened, he was taken to a hospital where he later died.
Officials at the Panther Wildlife Management Area had been unaware of Sunday's event until they were notified by callers after the service.
"We did not know that this event was happening, and if we had known about it or if we had been asked for permission, permission would not have been granted," Hoy Murphy, public information officer for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, told ABC News.
Hoy said West Virginia state park rules prohibit animals other than dogs and cats on the property.
While snake-handling is legal in West Virginia, other Appalachian states, including Kentucky and Tennessee, have banned the practice in public spaces.
Snake-handlers point to scripture as evidence that God calls them to engage in such a practice to show their faith in him. Mark 16: 17-18 reads, "And these signs shall follow them that believe: In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Wolford told the Washington Post magazine in 2011 that he is carrying on the tradition of his ancestors by engaging in snake handling.
"Anybody can do it that believes it," Wolford said. "Jesus said, 'These signs shall follow them which believe.' This is a sign to show people that God has the power."
Wolford said watched his own father die at the age of 39 after a rattlesnake bit him during a similar service.
"When he got bit, he said he wanted to die in the church. Three hours after he was bitten, his kidneys shut down. After a while, your heart stops. I hated to see him go, but he died for what he believed in.
"I know it's real; it is the power of God," Wolford told the Washington Post Magazine last year. "If I didn't do it, if I'd never gotten back involved, it'd be the same as denying the power and saying it was not real."

G*Y LECTURER ARRESTED AT AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY FOR HARASSING MALE STUDENT.

53 SHOT, 10 DEAD!!!
For the father of a beautiful seven year old girl who was shot while playing in front of her house on the southside of Chicago, for the best friend of the playful fourteen year old young man shot dead in his head while eating outside a pizzeria on the northside of Chicago, he won't be able to wake up tomorrow morning thanking God. For the mother of the thirty three year old US Coast Guard member who was pronounced dead when he arrived at Jackson Park Hospital, she tells the media, "I don't think the black male life expectancy goes past 25 now. He is 33. I thought I had got him past the hump." This is reality. Maybe not for us white people, but for millions of black people, this is what every weekend looks like. And this is precisely what it looked like in Chicago this past weekend. 53 shot. 10 dead.
The response? The Mayor and the police chief gave a press conference and said it's nothing new, cause they had the same number of shootings at this time last year, but they introduced a new approach to slow down the violence. They were going to go after the liquor and convenient stores where gang members and drug dealers hang out and clean house.
And in the words of the Mayor,
"we will go after you!" Threats and band-aids. And sometimes band-aids do work and sometimes we need band-aids, but Mr. Mayor of Chicago and to mayors across this country, this is no paper cut. A band-aid may stop the bleeding today, but the cut will require surgery tomorrow.
The solution to this problem is easy. It is not fast, but it is easy. If we, as a society, truly want to end violence in urban communities, we could. We have the will power to do so. The question is, do white people want to be part of the real solution? I am not saying that black people are off the hook for their contributions to the solution, but until WE (white people) put skin in the game, we, white people, will be content with the band-aid and threat approach. As long as we can contain the violence to the imagination of black and brown people, then we never have to worry about this nightmare. But, if we are to say that this country gives every individual the right to the pursuit of happiness, then we will invest in urban communities the same way we invest in white America. We will build the best schools possible, the job-training programs that lead to long-term high paying jobs, end racist drug policies that house a disproportionate amount of people of color in warehouses that we call prisons, invest in local, small businesses that re-invest in the community, build infrastructure and energy policy that supports 21st century technology, tighten gun laws so these killing machines don't get into the hands of the wrong people and ensure access to high quality healthcare. Not fast, but easy.
53 people shot in one weekend is unacceptable for a nation as prosperous as ours. It is unacceptable if the victims were white, black, brown or any other shade of the human complexion. We must do better and we will. If we are to solve America's problems, then ALL Americans must be part of the solution. Just imagine, in the near future, one weekend when the gunshots are silent.
"I HATE INDIAN FOOD NOT INDIAN PEOPLE" - KIM KARDASHIAN
Kim Kardashian had on Sunday night's episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, told her family she thinks Indian food is "disgusting."
Her offhanded remark drew criticism throughout the Twittersphere.
"I think it's good Kim Kardashian doesn't like Indian food, because that means she won't ever visit India and that in itself is a blessing," one tweep wrote.
"Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner called Indian food 'so disgusting.' Seriously? You don't have to like it, [but] don't be rude." another wrote.
To clear the air, On Tuesday, Kardashian took to her blog to address the backlash in a post titled
"Just Want to Clear Something Up."
"In NO way was [my comment] intended as an insult to the Indian people or their culture. This is just my own personal taste," she wrote. "There are a lot of foods I don't like . . . I hate cilantro and peppers, and there are definitely some Armenian foods that I personally find disgusting, but that doesn't reflect my opinions on other Armenian people or my culture."
"My comment wasn't intended to offend anybody. We all have our own opinions and tastes and I was simply expressing mine."
NO GOING BACK ON RENAMING OF UNILAG AS MOSHOOD ABIOLA UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS - F.G.
The Federal government through Nigeria's information minister's indicated that it'll not go back on president Goodluck Jonathan's decision to rename University of Lagos as Moshood Abiola University of lagos. Abiola is the adjudged winner of the June 12 1993 election which was annulled by President Ibrahim Badamosi babangida.
Students for a second day protested against the government decision to rename the school, using buses to block both sides of the Third Mainland Bridge.
Nigeria's Information Minister, Mr. Labaran Maku who was responding to questions from newsmen on the protest that greeted President Goodluck Joanthan's gesture noted that Nigerians should not allow the protest to overshadow the national significance of what President Goodluck Jonathan has done.
President Goodluck Jonathan had in his nationwide broadcast Tuesday on the occasion marking the Democracy Day May 29th 2012, renamed the university in honour of the business mogul turned politician who died in prison while attempting to claim his mandate.
Jonathan had stated that Abiola, presumed victory in the 1993 Presidential election, and death, while in custody, proved to be the catalyst for the people’s pro-democracy uprising; adding that “after very careful consideration, and in honour of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s accomplishments and heroism, on this Democracy Day, the University of Lagos, is renamed by the Federal Government of Nigeria, Moshood Abiola University, Lagos. The Federal Government will also establish an Institute of Democratic Studies and Governance in the University.”
This decision did not go down well with the student of the university who went on the street to protest.
Labaran Maku also said, “For those of us who have been part of this country for long and who have been adults that lived through the history of Nigeria, particularly in the last two decades if there is any figure that symbolizes sacrifice of self for this nation, that figure is Chief M.K.O Abiola who clearly won the June12 1992 Presidential election and died in captivity because he stood for principle, he stood to defend the principle of democracy, and anyone that is familiar with the development of our politics in the last two decades, there is no event in the political history of our country that touches the hearts of quiet a significant number of citizens like the June 12 Presidential election."
“In the last two decades there have been widespread outcry that this democracy has not given Chief M.K.O Abiola and other heroes who passed on in controversial circumstances as a result of what they did to stand for the democratic development of this country. These outcries have continued to come from citizens spread across the nation."
“What Mr. President did was to listen to the outpouring of appeals of persuasions by Nigerians across this country that MKO deserved to be immortalised. What he therefore did in his capacity as a visitor to the University of Lagos was to name the University after Moshood Abiola of blessed memory. He did so in the best interest of the country, he did so because any nation that does not honor those who clearly stand out and make a sacrifice as a role model or others to follow cannot appeal to the best in its own traditions for citizens to follow. The decision has been made in very good faith by Mr. President and we have seen the reactions by a section of the students if University of Lagos , we have also seen the outpouring of encomiums by patriots and statesmen who really understand the reasons why the President honored Abiola."
“It is our hope that reasons will prevail and that the decision to honor one of our nations's and heroes will be appreciated by all Nigerians including our youths and students who are the future leaders of this country.
“Yes sometimes government decisions get reactions from the populace we do not as an administration see this as disapproval. We just see it as a normal way in every democracy that when you make major decisions definitely sometimes you have public reaction but we should not allow the protest to overshadow the national significance of what Mr. President has done. I think he has shown that he is a true statesman and he truly appreciates the significance of M.K.O contribution in the political development of our country and as people who were adults in 2003 we think that this decision has been long over-due and that today Abiola can turn in his grave and say this nation for whom I made a supreme sacrifice for political development has recognized my contributions.
“I think the most important thing is that this decision should unify Nigeria, those who believe in one country, those who believe in one democracy, those who believe in the reward for sacrifice for the nation and I think that is exactly what the President did.”

RATTLE SNAKE BITES MAN AT WALMART
(05-14) 08:40 PDT Lewiston, Idaho (AP)
A man says he reached down to pick up a stick lying in the gardening aisle of a Wal-Mart in eastern Washington state, only to discover that it was a rattlesnake that then bit his hand.
Mica Craig says he was shopping in the outdoor garden department of a Clarkston store when he was bitten Saturday. The 47-year-old man says it latched onto his hand and that he screamed, shook loose the snake and stomped it to death.
The Lewiston Tribune (http://bit.ly/J4pfe5 ) in Idaho reports a bystander drove Craig to an emergency room in nearby Lewiston. Craig says he was treated with six bags of anti-venom and was told that his hand could be permanently disfigured.
He says doctors expect him to remain hospitalized until Tuesday.

WITH A WIN IN TEXAS PRIMARY,MITT ROMNEY WINS REPUBLICAN NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney has clinched the Republican nomination for president with a win in the Texas primary.
The Associated Press delegate count shows that Romney surpassed the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination during Tuesday's primary. Early returns show Romney posting a big win in Texas.
It's a triumph of endurance for a candidate who came up short four years ago and had to fight hard this year as voters flirted with a carousel of GOP rivals.
Romney reached the nomination milestone with a steady message of concern about the U.S. economy, a campaign organization that dwarfed those of his GOP opponents, and a fundraising operation second only to that of his Democratic opponent in the general election, President Barack Obama.
